 BACKGROUND NOTE

The Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (Inc) (ALSWA) was established in Perth in 1973, developing out of the Justice Committee of the New Era Aboriginal Fellowship Inc. It started with two lawyers, three Aboriginal court officers and a secretary.

From 1975 ALSWA started to expand and by 1983 was providing legal aid service to Australian Indigenous people, in accordance with Commonwealth grant conditions, throughout Western Australia.

ALSWA became an incorporated body in 1975 and is governed by an Aboriginal Executive Committee.

The access conditions for this collection were changed by ALSWA in 2005.
