The theme for NAIDOC 1985 was "Understanding: It takes the two of us".

There was a special emphasis on youth in 1985 to correspond with the International Youth Year. Awards for Aboriginal of the Year, and for Aboriginal young people aged 12 to 25 were introduced this year.
