About this Website

Back to Exhibition
From 12-26 February 1965, 29 students from the University of Sydney, undertook a bus trip throughout New South Wales. The purpose of the trip was to investigate race relations in country towns and living conditions for Aboriginal people on reserves and in the towns. This bus trip became known as the Freedom Ride.

One of the students, now Professor Ann Curthoys, has written a book entitled Freedom Ride: A Freedom Rider Remembers (Sydney, Allen & Unwin, 2002).

Professor Curthoys recently deposited the research papers for her book in the AIATSIS Library (MS 4185 and MS 4186). Among the research papers was a diary she wrote while on the Freedom Ride. This website feature s Professor Curthoys’ diary and other items from the AIATSIS collections.

There are many other stories of the Freedom Ride yet to be told. If you have a story about the Freedom Ride you would like to tell, please contact Pat Brady, Collection Manager, AIATSIS Library
