About the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander Studies
AIATSIS is an independent Commonwealth Government statutory
authority devoted to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies.
It is Australia's premier institution for information about
the cultures and lifestyles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples.
A staff of approximately 100 people, directed by the Principal,
engages in a range of activities of interest to Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples, scholars and the general public.
AIATSIS research staff conduct high-quality research and also
administer research grants for projects approved by the Council.
Our award-winning in-house publisher, Aboriginal Studies
Press, publishes an extensive array of books, cassettes and
CDs, films and videos, reports, and the Institute's journal,
Australian Aboriginal Studies.
Our Library and Audiovisual Archive holds the world's most
extensive collections of printed, audio, and visual materials
